Benefactors

Benefactors – the people who help the singing continue –

The Climate Choir Movement exists because people believe that singing together can help us build connection, courage and collective action for our changing climate. Behind every choir, every gathering and every new voice are people who choose to support this work. Some give their time, some give generously today, and others have chosen to leave a lasting legacy for the future. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helps make the Climate Choir Movement possible.

Legacy Benefactors

A lasting gift for a living movement

A legacy gift is a deeply personal way of supporting something that matters to you. Family members of the individuals remembered here have chosen to leave a lasting contribution to the Climate Choir Movement, helping future generations find community, hope and a collective voice through singing.

We are honoured to share their stories and grateful for the part their legacies will play in the future of the movement.

Christabel Rhoda Thorp Waley

Christabel Rhoda Thorp Waley
About Christabel

Christabel Rhoda Thorp Waley was a musician and climate activist whose life brought music and environmental commitment into one practice.

Christabel was a violinist and pianist from childhood, rooted in classical training, but it was as a mature student in her 30s, during her BA and MMus in Popular Music, that she found her direction more fully. Her studies became a turning point in recognising her calling: to bring music into conversation with the climate crisis. Her MMus work focused directly on protest music, beginning with Victor Jara in Chile and moving on to explore what music can do in the face of environmental urgency – the topic of her final thesis for which she gained a Distinction.

Despite having no compositional background, she became determined to write climate protest songs, and created work that was direct, singable, and grounded in environmental concerns. Here are Christabel’s wonderful compositions.

Initially performing her songs with Extinction Rebellion she then joined The Climate Choir Movement as a dedicated member. She lived her values through music – singing, organising, and taking part in climate actions.

On July 7th 2025, Christabel tragically took her own life at the age of 38.

Christabel’s legacy

This fund has been set up by Christabel’s mother, Dilys Thorp, in her memory. Christabel always wanted to help people, and Dilys is sure this fund is something her daughter would have wanted.

Christabel’s legacy reflects her love of music and her commitment to the environment and climate justice. This generous gift aims at retaining and growing the Climate Choir Movement and encouraging young musicians to take action. To visit her memorial and leave a tribute, please click here.

Fi Radford

About Fi

Fi Radford, who died aged 72 of cancer, devoted her retirement to environmental activism. She was active in many organisations, including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, the Green party and the anti-fracking movement, and, with the birth of Extinction Rebellion (XR), saw hope for a livable planet for her grandson.

Fi was a fearless campaigner who was arrested in London at the first XR protest. Her involvement with XR included inducting hundreds of activists into the cause, and she was part of XR’s Rebel Elders and Aged Agitators groups. With both XR and Greenpeace she took part in many campaigns on deforestation, energy, oceans and climate change, and against the expansion of Bristol airport.

She also founded Bristol Environmental Activists Together, was a member of Grandparents for a Safe Earth UK, and regularly demonstrated against the financial sector’s worst offenders on fossil fuel investment. At XR’s “You Can’t Eat Money” action outside BlackRock’s London HQ in 2019, she told fellow demonstrators: “People need to know what goes on behind those shiny glass doors. The business they’re engaged in is actually destroying our life-support system.”

In 2019 Fi gave a powerful TEDx Talk, What did you do in the climate crisis, Grandma?, calling for the mobilisation of “an army of rebel retirees”. In the talk, she said: “It’s time to reboot retirement. This is not the time to rest on our laurels, spend the children’s inheritance or stay at home feeling unwanted and lonely. We have never been more needed and more valuable.”

Fi’s legacy

In Fi’s honour, the Fi Radford Memorial Fund has made a kind donation to the Climate Choir Movement, aimed at supporting young people’s participation in peaceful, non-violent campaigning in the area of climate change and the environment.
